Educause 18

Educause 2018 Diary....
Crossing Greenland
Saturday October 27th
A 9 hour flight from London, good to see a few UK colleagues on the long flight. The last time I came to Denver was to attend my first ever Educause conference in 2009 clearly Denver was quite a bit changed.

Sunday October 28th
A early morning run along the clear and fast flowing Cherry Creek River which was fun albeit a little dark and there were a few sleepers along way, the other thing I noticed were the large number of rabbits and rats I think I saw more rats than I ever do see in London but on a par with the number of foxes I see in London. I spent Sunday having a bit of a wander around and I went to the Denver Art Museum a good walk, shopping and trying to get rest.

Monday October 29th
The Rockies
A day off to take a chaperoned trip to the Rocky Mountain Park, this was a trip I had promised myself the last time I came to Denver. It was well worth the 90 minutes drive, quite astonishing in scale and breadth. Blue skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. I really enjoyed seeing the landscape from growing up in North Norfolk (highest point about 350ft above sea level) interesting to get to nearly 12,000 feet above sea level.

Tuesday October 30th
Up again around 3.30am to get in touch with work and catch up on outstanding emails/items. I had a number of business meetings planned throughout the day. Tried out the Hotel gym, realised yet again why I don't like running on treadmills. The weather was completely different, much colder and overcast with some snow & rain. A few further meetings and an evening event with fellow UK & UCISA attendee's.

Wednesday October 31st
Some Great Sessions
Below freezing, but early morning run was good, except for the freezing rain. Early morning contact with work with some operational matters, went to a very good keynote by Michele Norris and then on to several sessions including Women CIO's: Diverse Pathways to the C-suite, API's: A Better Strategy for Higher Ed, Creating a more inclusive Higher Ed Community. Had a great discussion with colleague Peter Bryant. Halloween of course was in full swing and inspite of the cold some great outfits on show.

Thursday November 1st
up early for 6am run with other colleagues from Educause......the 3rd annual Educause run, really enjoyable and a chance to meet new people with a common interest, then on to several sessions including, How to think like a Futurist, 3D Printers as a Sketchbook, Digital Transformation in Higher Ed, 5 Years Later: Is CIO still the best job on Campus?

Denver Union Station
Friday November 2nd
A final run in the cold along the Cherry Creek River and onto the last sessions of this Educause, the final keynote 'Making Something People Love' by Alexis Ohanian was very good a final lunch with new colleagues and I gradually made my way back to the Denver Airport by means of the much improved rail link.

Saturday November 3rd
Back into Heathrow by 9.30am, very easy and well connected journey back to the homestead by11.30am.

Reflections

I think it was one of the best Educause conferences I have been to, and I've been attending Educause for nearly 10 years. My impression this time around was a marked change in direction towards leadership skills, strategic thinking, what Higher Education is actually for and a big focus on equality, diversity and fairness, all very welcome and some bold changes. I would like to be more involved with the organisation of Educause & I think there is more to be done in the way in which Educause operates internationally although I am encouraged with some changes to the program committee for next year. I left the conference feeling optimistic and hopeful for the future and looking forward to Educause 2019 in Chicago.

At Year End

Late July and August (in the UK) are the times in the higher education academic year when we reach performace review time and we reach financial year-end so there is a good  opportunity to reflect on the previous year and the chance to plan for the forthcoming year.

For everyone working in higher education these days its no longer a glorious long summer of just carrying out research and spending time just thinking.

Many years ago in my first role after my return to the UK, students would leave the University around the end of May and we would not see them again until early October.  I also had a wonderful Chair of department who very graciously allowed that whole period as a mixture of annual leave, technical upgrades and personal research. It was a wonderful time and not something that would be counternanced these days.

So moving forward about 30+ years and clearly things have changed quite a bit. I have over 150 people I'm responsible for and I have to bring home on budget a substantive multi-million pound budget.

Higher education financial year ends (in the UK) on July 31st and of course begins on August 1st. My team and I have to ensure for at least five months before this we are on track and on target in terms of budgets. For the past several all years my combined budgets have come in on-target.

On August 1st new operational budgets get loaded and budgets for continuing and new capital projects become available. Normally there are small increases to take into account such as the cost of living increases and any potential staff awards that are negotiated on a national and local basis. We also ave to budget for any potential changes in su[plier costs. Usually by early September the budgets are all in place and we can financially forecast with some accuracy the forthcoming year.

Getting the capital budgets in place in early August is always an exciting time because it means we can start moving ahead with some key capital programs that are directly linked to process improvement and with a focus on the students experience, which these days is often mis-labeled 'Digital Transformation'.

I am grateful that the largest program and project management team for the University is managed out of IT Services projects & programmes. This means I do have some direct responsibility for the management and delivery of enterprise wide change projects and programs. If I was just managing IT Services it would be a far less interesting role!

We do also have some new major projects & programs including;

User account management.
Render and storage.
Information security and network visibility.
Monitoring and improving performance of IT systems and services.
QL Legacy data centre.
Seamless sign on and multi factor authentication.
Additional Data centre and disaster recovery.

& potentially these as well...

New CRM.
Online Estates: Learning & Teaching.
New E-Recrutiment.
Employe Case Relations System.

....and of course the several ongoing multi-year projects are continuing, including the biggest change management program that the University has ever undertaken the Next Generation Student Systems. This in particular is a massive change for the University since uniformity of approach is one of the key enablers of the new process and this has gone surprisingly well considering the disbursed nature of the University.

Most of all this time of year for me at least is the time to reflect on the previous year and the success and challenges we have encountered.

Evidently sometimes those challenges have been entirely organisational and frustrating and others entirely outside of of our control and external to the University.

The important thing is to think about what we have learnt and how we can do better next time, failure is actually a big part of being successful.

I also personally reflect on life the universe and everything. I realise I have been at the same institution for 4 years and just starting year five, is it good to move fairly regularly?......sometimes yes but sometimes no. If someone would have told me ten years ago I would have the job I have now I would not have believed them.  For the time being I'm happy where I am but I would never not say that I'm not open to interesting opportunities. I do however sometimes grow tired of the lack of life quality and the expense of London and of course Brexit is a continuous worry, but my USA colleagues have I think far more to worry about in regards to domestic politics. I have a long way to go before I retire (still well into double digits) but its important to start to think this far out about where you would like to end up....

I'm also aware that personally I've more to do this coming academic year, I need to get a major print project off the ground and getting some my own prints in some shows. I'm also seriously thinking about setting up my own print studio, but that in turn may make my print works more furtive.

I'm also really enjoying my various sporting activities such as medium distance running, open water swimming, cycling & running.  I'm certainly not at a level where I can 'compete' but I just enjoy the activities, its great to feel good. Making time for others is also key, the older you get the more familiar relationships mean, its important that these are maintained.

Overall though its good to look forwards to a new academic year with some plans a sense of optimism on both a personal and professional level.

The CanHeit-Tecc Conference 2018

View from SFU Campus
This was my first time attending a Can-Heit conference and the first time I had been to Canada, the long flight over to Vancouver was good (via Air Canada) & Vancouver is a wonderful, lively and diverse city.
The conference was held over two & a half days & this year hosted by Simon Fraser University which is literally on top of a mountain in a district of Vancouver called Burnaby. The other very large University in Vancouver is the University of British Columbia which is located in central Vancouver, but more on the University of British Columbia later.

I arrived a two days before the conference & took some planned annual leave (it was a far, far cheaper air fare to do this). I managed to successfully travel from the airport to the Campus and settle into my dorm room($30CAN per night)…which was just that a room, no ensuite  ‘co-ed’ sets of showers & bathrooms down the hall. It took me right back to my first few weeks at University…...but a least this time I wasn’t also sharing a room. Next to the halls of residence  was a student commissary which served up some perfectly fine cheap breakfast ($5CAN), lunch & dinner.
Anthropology Museum UBC

On my second day I got adventurous and went for an amazing run-down Burnaby Mountain, it was a beautiful morning and the forest was not something I’d ever seen before, huge trees towering above me, primordial type plants and just glimpses of the bay below, it was certainly an experience that I will remember for quite a while and for a flat city runner a very tiring one!

Anthropology Museum UBC
I then took the ‘sky train’ (Vancouver’s metro system, mostly above ground on a dedicated high track) to a bus interchange to the University of British Columbia Campus to visit the Museum of Anthropology which did not disappoint, it was stunning & I learnt quite a bit about the indigenous culture of this part of Canada. While there I also visited ‘wreck Beach’ just so could see the water and after climbing down several hundred step steps I found it…and then discovered it was a clothing optional beach and fairly popular.

I was quite amazed by the size of the campus at the University of British Columbia (UBC) it was huge! and incredibly neat & tidy, clearly UBC was well supported and has a great reputation for innovation, research & learning & teaching
That evening there was the first social event of the conference (nicely called ‘A Peak above The Clouds’...the pun was intended) which was held on the top of the mountain in an open area. The view across the city of Vancouver really gave you a sense the City was founded at the very beginning of the Mountain ranges and a natural port.
Onto the conference itself…a list of great (for me) highlights.
John O Brien CEO Educause; Tech Futures
Michael Berman, Chief Innovation Officer at California State University.
Women in IT.
Dual Factor Authentication at Ryerson.
Grumpy Old CIO’s (not me)
Unfunded Projects & Programs.
Ai & Machine Learning, applied to IT service functions.
Professional Development Scheme; CUCCIO.
Jennifer Moss ‘Unlocking Happiness at Work’.

And some more general observations
The Women in IT breakfast being sponsored by Microsoft albeit a bit of an early start (7am)
The guided run through the forest.
An awards ceremony.
The social event in a whole pub.
The tour I had with others of the new build for The Emily Carr School of Art & Design.
How friendly everyone was.
The announcements at larger events about the land use.
